Shortening bumper mounts?- Bring bumpers closer to body.

Recommended Posts

Not sure if I wanna go the bumperless route with an airdam or I was thinking of shortening the bumber mounts to bring the bumpers closer/right to the body.

Has anyone done this or have photos?

Thanks

Yeah, thats Jeff's car. HE also took the front bumper and milled about an inch and a half out of it to get it to fit even closer.

I shortened the diving boards on my '75 before i decided to go with an airdam front and (sort-of) euro rear. You have to patch some holes to do either of those options though.

Shortening is pretty easy. Drill a hole in the bumper shock (get a good bit for this, those things are hard as hell - and use a lot of machine oil so you dont break it!) and compress it to release all the fluid (mine stank something awful)

Then, drill a second hole on the inner shock. Put a screw in there to keep everything in place like a locking pin. Then you're all set with the shocks.

Take the side bellows and cut about 4" or so out of them (its better to do this after you've gotten the bumper on the car for a test-fit without the side pieces on) After you cut them apart, glue the 2 halves together with superglue or epoxy and put a coat of paint on them.

You'll also need to trim the small rubber skirt on the rear bumper and the larger u-shaped bumper covers for the front. A pair of tin snips works wonders for this.

Yes, I have a Big Fat Nasty Plasma cutter. Bumpers get pretty nasty cause the alloy gets real thick in spots. After you knock the bulk or it down stick it in a end mill and free hand it. LOL enjoy. Oh, Don't forget to get the mounts the right length. Took about 3" out of the center on the front. Should wind up 1/4" spacing across the bumper.

Wow, that looks like a lot of work! And an interesting look for sure.

Just curious, why not convert to the small bumpers instead?

Didn't know there were smaller bumpers (new to 2002) and this mod wont cost me anything and if I automagically were to screw up I'd just put in an airdam.

let me know if you need an air dam. i've got a nice turbo one that i don't think i'm going to use. it already has the little notches cut in it for the big bumper shocks.

it's a nice fiberglass one, painted yellow but could be repainted easily. very nice shape.
