Speaking of Heater boxes...

Has anyone found a good replacement for the blower fan? I have two heater boxes and I want to repair both while they are out of the car and add replacement fan units. Is it possible to use one from another 70's model european car?

You can still get the bosch motor for that fan new. It's not cheap, maybe as much as $90 ish, I forget it's been a while. But for the time involved to remove a heater box, especially if you have AC in center console, why not do it right & put in a new motor ? Only trick is you have to carefully remove the fan blad from the old motor. The plastic hub in the center of the blade can break easy if you don't pry it off with care. Also if you have 2 fan motors, try to make one good one from the two you have can work also. I've seen the brush holders melt, but if you go to hardware store like ACE hardware, you can find replacement brushes for power tool motors that are curved & almost same size, will fit with a little filing.

I was at this place in Orlando Fl called Sky Craft. They had all kinds of fans that look like computer cooling fans from 1" in diameter to 1'. i took a guess and bought one.

When I got home I had to do a little filing but I got it to fit. I don't know how well it will work but it seems to move a lot of air and draws only 1.85 amps. I'm gonna give it a go.

The only thing you have to look out for is that the new fan is at least water-resistant. That thing is going to see a good amount of moisture, no matter what you do, so its best to make sure it doesn't corrode and lock up in a year.

As for our Bosch fans, BMW sells them new (with fan blade) for $229.00. A marine blower motor may be a better idea, by comparison.

My old one was in good shape, so it went back in the car after a little cleaning.

Man! I didn't even think of that.

Yea, I got mine motor from Mesa performance in CA some time ago, it was the bosch, no more than $90, I can't remember, but you see for another $100 in that link blunt posted, you get a new fan w/blade. I think that fan draws about 5 to 6 amps on high speed, so if the computer fan pulls less than 2, it's probably about 1/3 the total air flow. I think i put 2 small pieces of angle iron across two 4 x4's that fit under the plastic on the fan blade, then used a punch or something to gently hammer the shaft down. I broke one fan blade before I figured out how to do it. I've fixed a few of these motors before, but some lasted a year, some lasted a few years. Two things I've seen, the bushings/bearings on both ends get gunked up, WD40 or other solvent then WD40 or better oil fixed that. Then the brushes wear down to where they don't make good or consistant contact. New brushes are cheap, but you gotta make sure the brush holders aren't melted, so the new brushes fit tight. & you need to solder the new brushes in.
