Thinking about looking for a nice 02 in Germany. Need help with an inspection and exporting to the US. Is there a fellow 02 lover over there who would be willing to help? Would pay a bit if necessary but prefer to put as much money as possible into the purchase price. Thanks.

I spent six months in Germany in 2004, thought I would find me a nice 02 to bring back stateside. DOT rules are exempt after 25 years so you don't have to do all the modifications (side marker lights, etc.). Here in CA, if it 76 or newer, it stll has to pass CA smog test. So I was looking for a 75 or older.

Notice you don't see any old cars on the roads over there? Road salt from the 70's and 80's has taken its toll. Road salt is not used anymore due to environmental reasons (a little too late for us). Car are in two categories, restored (big Euro's) or needs restoring, (how deep are your pockets). I even saw old US spec Benz's at Fiat's at car shows from CA that were brought back to Germany. If you are going to look for a 02 in Europe, go to Italy or Spain where the climate is much better. I've seen more 02's in CA that I did while I was in Gemany except at Nurburgring Historics.

While you are over there, look for 02 parts as well. I scored a crack free one piece 02 dash (without the fasten seatbelt billboard) for 120 Euros at a swap meet. I mailed it back and it's now in my tii.

Enjoy the food and beverage while you are over there, no doubt that I could eat and drink my way across Europe.

Good day Dan,

I know someone who can help you look for an 02 in Germany. I also know of a very nice restored 02 for sale. I can send you pictures if you like. I saw the car in person.

Feel free to E-mail me or call me.

Dan:

I imported my 1971 Cab from Belgium. The entire transaction was handled by Lauren Manders of Manders Autogas. He is hooked into the BMW 2002 collectors market in Europe and has access to a number of very collectable models including targas, cabs, and turbos.

You might try shooting him and e-mail, or checkout his website for available cars.

I imported a 02 myself from Germany without any problems.

it was relatively easy. Since I had to be back in the US quickly,

I did have some help from a friend to handle the paperwork at the

German DMV, and deliver the car to the shipper

for me in Munich (or can be Bremerhaven). I used the same shipping

company that brings over new BMW's to the US.

I'm sure you can find a volunteer to help with inspection in the German 02

club. (you can post on their message board). everyone I met while

I was there was pretty nice.

you can handle the paperwork yourself easily on this end, especially if

you are picking up the car yourself from the port. The shipping company

told me exactly what I needed to do, which was to go to US Customs office,

and get forms signed, and pay duty, then go to the dock office, and then

off I drove.......

if you have any questions feel free to contact me.

Can you give more details such as a link to an appropriate German board. Name of shipping company. What did it cost you. Your email or phone number would be helpful also.

Thanks
