Who's running dizzyless ign?

What's the best one? price? value? reliability? I'm looking for a starter setup for a carbureted application. Simple very straight forward distributorless ignition. I have a budget of about $300. Can this be done?

Please help me so that I can buy one of those cool distributor housing plugs from the FAQ store.

if i ever get my car back together i will be running a Electromotive HPV-1. I have everything to get it running. I bought unit off ebay and the kit from skidmark. Electromotive seems to be the choice of high performance enigine builders/ racers.

i'm also interested

specifically an EDIS i can use with the 32/36 up until i do the megasquirt conversion (way in the future) and then use in conjunction with that

is that possible?

If you plan on doing Megasquirt anyway, then Ford EDIS in conjunction with a megasquirt is a good way to go.

http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/EDIS.htm

The new generation MS-II supports EDIS natively, but you can load a version of the firmware (MSnSparkExtra) onto an earlier (MS-I) version as well, that will let you run EDIS.

Even if you dont plan to fuel inject the car, you could run the MS for ignition only. That's what I'm doing at the moment, until I get around to bolting on the injection stuff.

I dont know anything about the other distributorless systems out there.

So what does the Skidmark kit come with? Also what did you "buy off ebay" that wasn't included in the kit you "bought off Skidmark"? How much did you spend?

Thanks,

I bought the Hpv-1 off ebay. Basically it came with the sensor and two coil packs. The kit from skidmark comes withe everything else you need to use it on an m10. skidmarks website isnt working for me or else id give you an itemized list. perry was more than happy to help me out and he said the hpv-1 was teh best choice. (they dont make it anymore)

I have been running a HPV-1 for about 6 years. The only issue I have had was a crank sensor going bad about a year ago. Caused the car to quit, but it started up right after. Took me about an hour to go 15 miles, no worse than gridlock traffic!

Honestly, this has been the most reliable ignition I have run and I can dial in my timing curve to the 318 FI I am running.

Good Luck,

Until recently (upgraded to Electromotive TEC F.I.) I was running HPV-1 for over 10 years without a single problem. I would highly recommend it. The biggest expense was having the crank pulley to hold the multi-tooth wheel and the sensor holder made. Now that Skidmark makes those parts I think this would be a good way to go. I still have my old set-up, but wasn't in a rush to sell it (HPV-1 and DCOE 40's). If you have any other questions let me know. --Rick

Rick,

Wanna sell that stuff? I'm interested in the lot. thomasjwinston at yahoo dot com. Also if Skidmark sells the crank setup then how much will the electromotive setup run? Is $300 reasonable to try and fit it all in for close to that? email me if you are serious about selling your setup & DCOE's

A complete electromotive setup is near enough a grand that it makes no difference. Race guys carry a spare, but it is considered reliable. I am recently interested in an MSD system made for 4 cylinder engines, they sell it for midget racing.

It sells for about $450, and seems to be very programmable.

Took a look: "Crank trigger must be fabricated" "coil pack sold seperatly". That means it's a grand either way right? Skidmark's crank & trigger wheel is $300 and the coil has to be at least $100. That's close enough to be called $1,000 right?

So which one's better????

(Guess I should throw my $300 budget out the window)

If you plan on going megasquirt later, jsut get the ECU now and just run the ignition timing from it. That way the ECU will be mounted and part of it will be there for when you get the full system going off of it.

Go with the multiple MSD coils for the GM HEI applications like my friend Matt did, supposedly its much better than the EDIS setup.

This might help as well.

Looks like I need to start really learning about exactly what I need to do... I'm building a forced induction motor so I need all the stuff those megasquirt guys are talking about - only I have no clue what I'm getting myself into!

Electromotive TEC 3 with EFI. Bought a dizzy plug from the Store. Here is my crank trigger. Have 7 extra available. Sold some on Ebay from time to time. Have an accurate drawing how to machine the pully for a 5inch wheel. Machine work cost $70. If anyone is interested, the bracket comes at $30 professionally made and will not wiggle. So for a $100 plus the wheel I had my crank trigger.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

The HPV-1 is a very hard unit to find. I looked for a year and got and bid on everyone one (for a 4 cylinder) that came up on ebay. then all of a sudden in one month 5 or so were listed on ebay. I emailed one guy to end the auction early and he actually had to units and sold me one (kinda sketchy not going through ebay). YOu can adjust the timing at different intervals and all you need is a screwdriver. also has a rev limiter. I paid 350 for my hpv-1 but i saw one on ebay not too long ago for just over 200. Funny thing was when i was bidding on the HPV-1 i looked at the history of the other bidders and one of them was an 02er, he had multiple purchases for 02 parts.
