distributor/spark plug configuration

I am putting a stock 74 '02 back together and have encountered conflicting documentation regarding the spark plug firing order on the distributor. The distributor in my vehicle doesn't match that shown in the Haynes manual. When standing near the right front wheel and looking at the distributor cap, the vacuum attachment is at the "5 o'clock" position on my distributor. A spark plug connection is immediately above this point - I believe this to be for the #2 spark plug wire. Would like a second opinion on this.

The firing order is fixed, but where they come off the distributor cap is relative to how the distributor is installed.

If you take off the cap, there is a little line cut into the rim of the distributor. That is where #1 should be. So rotate the engine to #1 TDC and make sure the rotor points to the line. The plugs go 1-3-4-2 clockwise from there.

I'm not sure if you want it lined up w/ the line when installed. I've found that you want to point the rotor at the line before you press it into place and then it will rotate to the right place, pretty much pointing towards the back clip of the distributor. Look in the haynes manual and they have a before and after photo. I think the line is to line it up before you press it into place, check your manual, it looks like #1 is towards the back clip and not the line.
