rough running '76

I have a 1976 '02 with a weber carb, pretty much everything else is stock. The car will run fine until I push in the clutch, at which point the revs drop to zero, and the car dies. As long as I'm moving and the clutch is disengaged it's fine. And when it dies, it starts right back up, no problem. This is my first '02 so I'm a little stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 76 02 stalled out like that when I first got it. There were several things wrong at the same time. First, the condenser was going, and it caused the tach needle to drop to zero-rpms immediately and of course the motor would die. It tended to act up when the motor rpms approached idle speed…like at every damned stop sign. Replacing the condenser was a quick/easy/cheap fix.

However, the car still ran rough and took a while to start, and I was not sure if the problem was in the ignition/timing or in the carb. So I replaced the points, condenser and coil with a Crane electronic ignition. This dramatically improved things, but not entirely. However, the more I drove it, the better it ran. So I am guessing the car mostly sat before I got it and the carb was seriously gunked up. I have been doing so many other things with the car that I haven't looked into cleaning out the carb yet. That's next once I get the exhaust manifold back on, and the floorboards welded + POR-15ed + coated, etc, etc.

IN THIS ORDER:

valve adjustment - all 0.006" COLD

ignition timing with a timing light - ball in window at 1400 rpm

and no vacuum hose to distrib. while checking

correct spark plugs and gap

idle jets clean

idle speed and idle mixture adjusted hot.

change the oil and filter - it needs it i'm sure

Thanks for all the info guys! It sounds like the same problem Randy was having. I'll try all those things and let you know what happens!

Make sure there are no wires interfering with the clutch pedal operation! or under it or anything like that. im trying to think ... what could it be! anyways, good luck! definitely start with the basics/tune up!!
