Amber Euro Side Marker Lights

So, I have a 1976 2002.

Just bought a set of amber euro side marker lights......

Question....

How do I wire them up?

I have, I guess, a plus and a ground wire for the old set....

The new set would appear to just accept one wire....

True/False...

Do I have to use the old light inserts and retro fit into the new lense...??

Help a rookie....

Paul

The way I wired mine is in accordance with a "Euro" spec '02. My sidemarkers are wired up as signals and the running light wire is hooked up to the city lights in my H4 headlights.

Get them at U-haul for around $5.00 for a set of two. Use the dual filiment light bulb and match the wires to the turn signal and running lights respectively. I had to test it by turning on the lights and touching each contact to find the right one then just wire them up and install. I got my euro lights from a FAQer for $150 shipped.

You have bought Euro /flush side lights with 1 bulb. You car is a US car that is wired for 2 bulbs. I thnk the easist way to make it all work, is to cannibalize the "innards" from a USA bulging side light that thas 2 bulbs, and put it into your amber Euro 1 bulb light. How to do the swap? I have seen 2 types of USA Innard adhesion methods by BMW to the lens over the years. BMW used the methods to accomlish the same task??. One is far easier to undo than the other. One is(virtually) impossible to extracate without destroying the innards. The one to ideally have is the one without rivets( as I recal- inspect the 2 types and make your own determination). Remove the USA innards and the EURO innards, then insert your USA innards into your euro amber lens using the secure points provided for the 1 bulb Euro innards. I have not done this in over 10 years, but I reacall there is an ovbious way to secure the USA innards to the flush Euro lens internal framwork. When I did this there were very few others who had guidance to offer. We were the people interested in swapping innards without creating an extra peanut bulb connectionto achieve the 2 bulb result. (The really lucky people are the ones that find USA Spec 1600s that have amber flush lens with 2 bulbs!) You now have the exact wire set-up that the car expects. To have running/parking lights, and turn signal lights. If you are really lucky, your car will illuminate the parking peanut light when you are parked by simply moving the stalk, with the key out. That is for narrow euro street parking and "do not hit me" warnings, and is a bit of trivia, not part of the build process. As Steve J. mentioned. It is 71,72 only, I think. The FAQ archives have coverd this topic a lot, but the archives seem to have cut out some of the first and very comprehensive posts about such projects. I do not know why this happened. Best advise is to go to a 2002 parts reseller, and look at the 2 types of USA side lights and determine which one will be easier to remove and insert into your Euro amber flush lenses. Buy a couple pair( check if they work if you have some alligator clips on some wire and a 12 volt battery you happen to have brought along. The used USA turn lenses are usually really cheap, (unless they are cosmetically perfect.) All you need is internally dry and working innards. Good luck in your project. Jay
