The german schematics use the square mm designation (directly denoting the cross sectional area of the conductor) - the third column in the above-referenced chart. If a mm size does not exactly match an AWG size, just use the next higher AWG size - aside from being slightly heavier, more expensive, and occasionally harder to run, bigger wire can never hurt and is usually an improvement. For automotive use, the more strands the better, too - more flexible and less likely to break from fatigue. More costly too, of course.

I'd boil it down like this:

.5mm = 20 AWG

.75mm = 18 AWG

1.0mm = 16 AWG

1.5mm = 14 AWG

2.5mm = 12 AWG

4mm = 10 AWG

etc.
