Here's the pic they give on the website for what fits a m10 (shown on a m20):

What you'd end up with is a filter hanging onto the throttle body for support. Not what the throttle body was designed for; a filter bracket of sorts.

BavAuto's air filter is similar to what a previous owner's son had done to my 635csi parts car, except the bellows wasn't a rubber sewer elbow from the hardware store. But it did make some marks on the valve cover, and it was covered in oil and dirt to boot. I have to admit, though, it was probably the best modification the previous owner's son had managed. His other noteable accomplishments were the bolt on pedal cleats - which either snag the sides of your shoes, or cause you to engage more than one pedal at a time; and the best accomplishment of all was his ability to make a 6 cylinder into a 4 without even removing the head. But rather than just removing the spark plugs or wires, he made it permanent!

OK, back to the subject though, the factory tii air cleaner housing is an excellent piece of engineering. It's cumbersome to remove, but I wouldn't put some aftermarket piece of crap on there of unknown origin. BavAuto would have to prove its effectiveness before I'd even consider it, and then I'd have to be racing for it to be a necessity. Too many products being released to the market on good-faith these days. Infomercials that pander to the lowest common denominator - dumb it down so that everyone can understand it - then repeat it 50 times so they also believe it. Not that I'm accusing BavAuto of brain washing, they have some good products. Some that fit a need, but others simply that take your money. K&N makes a good living off of it. You can buy reuseable filters that you can wash! But prior to paper elements, there were oil bath filters that you could clean, renew the oil and you were good to go. People did not want to maintain them. But K&N has a new selling point - more air flow, and... mumble...you can clean them and reuse them... ackwardly clearing throat...

Where is the science to back it up? Show me the dyno...

disclaimer: IMHO

I have one of these. It doesn't look like the picture above exactly.. its simply a k & n filter that fits right onto the throttle body -- no rubber hose or anything. So imagine the filter part in the pic above plugged right onto the air intake of the throttle body.

I don't think its any better than the stock -- probably not as good really, but if you're doing a lot of faffing around on the engine its nice because it does give you lots of room and its quick to remove.

It is a little louder -- the sound is pretty cool actually. Kinda get a woosh when you hit that upper power band
