M20 six-banger saga

So here are the results of lots of sandblasting, painting, welding and bodywork. There was lots of rust under the hood, in the engine compartment and around the side trim. I used 200 pounds of sand. My driveway was a sandbox for a weekend. I sourced touch-up paint in a spray can from paintscratch.com. One can was enough for the engine compartment, underside of hood and many spots around the car.

Here is the shortened shifter so the 323 trans will fit in the stock shifter hole. I welded the lower mount bracket directly onto the steel lug in the tranny.

Hopefully the engine will go in in a few weeks. I'm just waiting on a starter to come in the mail. And I lost those stupid sheetmetal covers that go around the bellhousing.

Daniel,

Looks great! It's incredible that you are doing ALL the work yourself. I'm super interested in how you put together your motor. One day when my stock M20 goes, I'd really like to build a stroker like you've done and especially because you've done it on a budget. Nice. I'm a teacher so not a lot of extra $$ to put into building a stroker.

If you ever need a hand let me know. I'm not too far, Oakland.

Thanks Evan.

Here is my latest idea for the m20:

A very simple roots blower install, though I'd like to go with the slightly larger M90, underdriven for lower air temps.

I just finished shortening the driveshaft myself. It was quite a bit easier than I thought it would be. The "sticking point" was trying to press the tube back onto the driveshaft end after it was shortened 3.5 inches- it required some sanding and polishing to get it to fit and then a torch to expand the tube. After I used a dial indicator to make sure it was straight I welded it back up with my mig welder.

I will post a picture later to show where it was shortened - at the back end of the front section just in front of the rubber center support bearing- if that makes any sense.

HEHE Hey it was nice to stumble across you at the MVV! Your 02 project is looking awesome although i have REAL doubts about those 1/8" motormounts!! I say that having broken the 1/4" thick stock mounts.. (yes, the metal part on the motor-side.. ;) anyways fantastic work, and i got a huge kick out of seeing yer rabbit! ;)

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
