AC Unit for a 1975 2002

Vintage Air looks like all american car kits, but I haven't called them. Mesa Performance in CA has a kit w/new sanden rotary compressor & mounting brackets, hoses etc.. for about $ 450. Check you local phonebook for an auto air specialist/parts place. We have one here in OKC, autoairofoklahoma.com.

I've bought stuff from them for a long time. Recevier dryer for 2002 cost me about $ 20, most places would charge more, but I carry it in & they match it up, I don't think they have any 2002 stuff listed in catalogs. If I remember correctly, I paid $200 or less for a rebuilt york compressor maybe 10 years ago, but I got on that was 2.6 cu in, & need 2.0 cu inch, & it was more drag on the motor than I liked, but it cooled. Hoses are generic though, any auto air place call sell you those, they go by inside diameter of hose. The suction line on your car is 1/2" ID for instance, looks like about 3/4" outside dia.

The 2002's A/C systems were not factory-integrated, and that it is a good thing when it's time to repair and replace parts.

Any good A/C shop can replace most of your a/c parts with off-the-shelf items. If you already have a York compressor, you can install a Sanden using an adapter, as was mentioned above.

About the only thing they would not be able to replace with a similar part (that probably works better) is the blower/condenser, and even then, I am sure that one of the Vintage Air universal ones can be made to work.

it's for an 82 320I, but I would think everything would mount up to an 02 engine. They even have mounting brackets.

Can anyone confirm or deny if it will work????

OK, I am currently reparing/upgrading the AC on one of my 02's, so I did a little more internet searching, & found an adapter plate that bolts up to the york mounting bracket & has 4 "ears" on it to bolt up a sanden rotary. So that was on ebay for abou $54 w/shipping from an AC parts supply house in TX. So I called my local AC supply house guys & asked & they have em too, about $60, & then I asked about york compressor prices $ 183 for a remfr York w/out pulley/clutch $239 for new york w/out clutch, and $233 for new Sanden w/pulley/clutch. Here is ebay link to see what the adapter plate looks like: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/YORK-TO-SANDEN-COMPRESSOR-CONVERSION-KIT_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33543QQihZ012QQitemZ220011794286QQrdZ1/

and I was wrong in my previous message about displacement, these are around 8 to 10 cu. inch displacement, It was 2 cylinder, not 2 cu inch.

So for about 293 (233 comp + 60 adapter plate), you can go from york to rotary sanden. The other thing is you can ditch the rubber mount bushings that I just paid the Benz dealer $80 for... !!!!! (or $50ish from BMW, but the mercedes ones don't melt /disentegrate over time) I'm also wondering if these Sandens are light enough & that bracket/adapter combo would be strong enough to cut the old york bracket part off where it bolts to the front of the water pump, it would make any front cover/water pump service 10 times easier w/out having to remove that bracket. The rotary on my other 02 has much simpler bracket, & I don't think it only bolts to the side of the block, so it should work. Now I have a good reason to buy that oxy/acetylene cutting torch !

I have all the AC components I took Off my '75 just sitting in my garage. You are welcome to all of them plus shipping, name your price. I'm just tired of tripping over it. I never turned it on when still attached to the car; I was de-smogging and decided, "While I'm in here....."
