What to use for undercarpet padding?

I've searched the faq, but found nothing conclusive. I have dampening material ready, I'm just looking for padding. I had the foam carpet padding in my old car and didn't like it too much.

Keep in mind that I'm in small town in NC without too many shopping options close by. I also looked at Lowes for a water heater blanket, but all they had was fiberglass.

Please help,

I used felt pad. Heat insulation and great for noise impervoious to just about anything. Home Depot may have it.

I will be using 1/4" closed cell foam. Available from specialty foam shops or internet. Does not absorb water and it does not attract moisture.

If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough.

Why not some type of Dynamat or knock-off like B-Quiet, etc? Do you still need a layer in between them?

Yes, you still need something softer than that. We use B Quiet, and then underlay over that. Once installed, the B Quiet is less than 1/8" thick. 40" underlay is about half an inch thick. Plus, it's softer, and takes up some of the contours in the floor.
