Whimp, and whimpy wife, needs cool advice

So I am looking to try an salvage my Behr air conditioning so my wife will ride in my car once in a while. I know it's a marginal system but when it was working, and I aimed it at her, she was ok. Now that the compressor has taken a dive I need to rebuild the system and upgrade as appropriate.

I've done a search and found lots of opinions on the merits of air in general as well as different methods of switching to rotary compressors. What I really hope to find is either someones site that outlines a successful rebuild (with pictures!), a local 2002 person who can show me their successfull rebuild in the flesh (tin) or the name of a good air conditioning shop in the SF Bay Area that has done a 2002 before and that I can consult with or hire to do the job.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Check with Vintage Air. You'll be able to upgrade the compressor with the Sanden type as well as upgrading the receiver/drier and condenser to a more modern type.

Ain't that the truth! My current tii does not have one, but my original '72 '02 had a frigiking and it had to be on full blast pointed right at you to even be remotely effective.

Conversely the heater was awesome!

makes an a/c unit blow cold..... when I put the a/c back in commission in my E21, there was a bunch of minor repair and general maintanence required - cracked ducts, missing and dried out seals, etc. If the fan isn't working properly and/or air is leaking out of the ducts and evaporator chest, much of the cooled air won't ever make it to the vents.

Once everything was fixed and properly sealed up, the E21's system (which is virtually identical to an '02's, and is stock except for a rotary compressor) pushes 36 degree (F) air out of the vents on a 100 degree day. It won't get the interior quite as cold as a new car, but it's real comfortable on hot days.
