Would a head from a 318i be ideal for an EFI setup?

I've got a buddy who has a 318i head with a schrick 304 and double springs that he's selling. Its completely rebuilt - but I dont know how I can use it on an 02. I've been considering EFI on my 72 - would this head do me any good?

Pat,

The 318 head has the largest combustion chambers of all the M10 heads. I think as far as a stock head it flows the best. It will give you the lowest compresion ratio with the pistons you have. Does that head use a 318 or o2 distributer? In other words was the 304 for an o2 or a 318? They make the distributer spin different directions.

You don't need a 318 head for efi. You can get the right manefold that will have the injector pockets.

Harv, the low compression is a good thing for me as im considering a turbo. And the cam doesnt matter as i will be running a crank driven ignition. If im not mistaken, the 318 head has the ports for the fuel injectors. Would that leave me more open as far as manifolds?

Yes it would leave you with more options. I think some 318 hhad the injectors in the head and some did not. Someone else may know more about that. I have a set of TWM ITB's for my car.

Your setup sounds pretty sweet. Are you going to be running a dizzy or some form of crank fire? Hey remember - that brown car you saw is long gone. I've got a red 74 and a golf 72 now. The golf is getting the awesome engine.

From my personnal experience and knowledge, the 318 head is the perfect candidate for a turbo efi set-up. It has the most perfected combustion chamber of all M10.

It maintains the lowest emisions of all, meaning that the combusiton process if the best, and also means that the mixture is not needed to be always richer like any 121 head, that equates to some more mpg or more power.

Only 320i with CIS got the injector into the head, only the 80's models. 318 got the injectors into the intake so you should get the intake as well with the fuel rail (important !!).

Listen to Pat A. Sound's like he knows the specifics.

I'm gonna run a megasquirt II with a version 3 board with Ford EDIS ignition.
