What is this under the back seats (pictures)

I removed my rear seats and found this jute-like material and a layer of an insulation type material. I am planning to put the "b-quiet" material all over the floor.

Is this the material that is best removed with dry ice? Can I just clean it up and lay the "b-quiet" right over this? or is it suggested to remove it all before putting on the "b-qiet"

The rear shelf tarpaper is glued on there really good, your best bet would be with a heat gun and a sturdy steel scraper (not too sharp, it'll scratch) Mine took me about an hour a few weeks ago.

You definatly want to remove the stuff on the wheel wells to inspect for rust. but if your're not too anal, there wouldn't be any problem cleaning that stuff and putting more on top of it.

while you're back there, try to find an bigass seat cushion out of a couch or something to sit on, the metal framing back there will kill your legs....

i agree, you definatley want to remove that stuff. especially the horizontal areas to check for rust underneath. im hoping the bubbling on the wheel arches isnt rust underneath. i used dry ice with great results. search dry ice for how to's. im not sure any sound proofing would stick to that nasty old stuff and adhesion is most important when sound deadening. good luck

Where you have bubbles on the driver's side as BLUNT suggested, you may have rust there. I found some there a short while ago on my own car. Has anyone done this repair? How complicated is it? Is it enough to just cut out the rusted outer and reweld in metal or are there underlying panels that must be addressed as well?
