I had to run by a car dealer and pick up a car at lunch for my wife to look at. We're in the market for a new (used) car for her right now and were looking at a Lexus RX300. Any ho, I leave the 2002 at the dealer and pick up the Lexus to show the wifey. By the time I get back 2 hours later the guy tells me he had 3 people stop and ask about my car! Cool.

Phil,

Nice story.

FYI, The early RX300's had a big problem with cams siezing causing catastrophic engine failure. To my knowledge, the problem is caused by infrequent oil changes resulting in sludge/deposit buildup which restricts oil flow to the journals in the heads. The RX300 is otherwise a fine vehicle. Just make sure you buy a well maintained one.

Good Luck!

George

RX300 is a big heavy ship compared to the handling of x3 and x5, drove them back to back at the track sponsored by BMW of course and tehre is no comparing.

thanks for the info guys, I did check Consumer Reports on this year and it got

a good report. No mension of any engine problems. Yes the Lexus is not a bimmer but this is my wifes car and she likes the ride over the BMW. What can I say.

I have driven the X5 at the release. Very capable car on the autocross course. Suprising, really.

On our last trip, we had a rental Ford Escape. I'd probably never choose to buy one, but for the week we had it, it was comfortable and fairly tractable. It was larger and less nimble than my 02, and when I forgot that fact...well, let's just say AWD and tall tires are nice. The space and AWD are nice, but I prefer to be a bit lower and able to corner as well.

I'd like to go test drive an X3 sometime. Perhaps one will show up in my group at the next car control clinic.
