Tach Wire Color

Recommended Posts

On both my ' 75 and my ' 76 the tach wire comes into the instrument cluster frame as a single black wire. Both of these cars are automatics and came OEM with a clock, but I've swapped in tachs on both cars and the tach wire, w/ a black right-angle connecter, was already in the car from the factory. I, too, cannot tell you exactly where it comes thru the firewall. There are actually 2 black wires that come into the connector.

There are actually three wires coming out of the back of the tach. On my '74, the plug in the center has two black leads, which go thru the firewall, into the distributor.

I was trying to ground my whole instrument cluster the other day, and was thinking the plug in the center with the two black wires was the ground, so I hooked it to the chassis.

As I later found out, the car wouldn't fire anymore. I had actually grounded out the signal from the distributor, preventing it from sparking. I snipped that ground, and it ran just fine again.

The other two wires must be the positive source of power, and the real ground. I can't remember the color of them.

Anyways, not sure what you're doing, but just pop out the instrument cluster and you can get a better look. You've just gotta reach your hand up and unscrew the speedo cable, and the two knob style nuts that are easy to loosen. Pop off a few harnesses, and its free.

has a jacket over it to protect it. It's a single wire all the way- it's 'optional' equipment...

As I recall, it runs through the dash to the right, and goes through the firewall pretty close to the dizzy...
