I still hate rocker arms, but I think now I hate the springs

So we yanked the head off the car- it seems that the super- sexy double springs with the dampers are...

exactly the same spring pressures, both closed and on the nose, as a stock spring! The only real virtue of these springs seems to be that they allow 6 mm more before bind...

Since I'm spinning to 7200 and use a cam with 8mm lift (at the lobe- 10 at the valve) I suspect that there MIGHT be some float/ bounce issues here!

The stock #'s:

71 lbs closed,

170 at 10mm,

bind at 13 at 250lbs.

What I had:

77 lbs closed

170 at 10 mm

bind at 18 (!!) at 260 lbs.

Ireland's 'race' spring:

93 closed

237 at 10mm

bind at 12mm at 300 lbs.

I'm planning on putting the Ireland springs in with a set of BMW rockers

and trying that. I have to say that the BMW rocker looks a lot like the Febi rocker- we even found visible voids in a few. But at 1/3 the $$$ of billet, I kind of want to see if they work...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Toby

I hate rockers too... yes I have broken a few at the track too :P The Ireland springs work good with a 316, and BMW vs Febi, not much difference besides cost. The thing to do is find someone you know who works with an MRI or x-ray machine and have them take pics of them to see if they have casting flaws internally. You will need to buy about 20 to find the good ones.

One other thing to do is take a die grinder and smooth/remove any of the casting high spots on the rocker. You could always have them cryo treated too ;)
