Original color of Rear license plate mount

I recently switched plates and wanted to refinish my rear license plate mounting plate (76 model). Can anyone fill me in on the color (or no color) of the rear mounting plate. Mine is a dark grey, which I believe to be original. Perhaps there was some treatment to it other than paint. Mine looks funky, but it will be hidden once I mount the plate (which by the way is a Historical Vehicle Plate (California).

I bought my ' 75 when it was only 6 yrs. old and the frame, although the car had been in AZ since delivery new, was all rusty. It appeared to have never been painted originally.

black satin finish ?

....appears to be all-original and it's painted as C.D. mentioned,

a satin black.

Perhaps, as in seemingly all things BMW, from that time period.....they painted these whatever color they had on hand.

Guessing either black or gray although. However, they may have painted them different colors depending upon the exterior color of the car.

So, I bet yours is original (gray) and mine is also, original (black).

I've seen both black and grey...more black ones though.

The original color was a gold Cad plating not easily duplicated, but I've heard of some kits that can be bought from places like http://www.eastwoodco.com/ to duplicate the look in gold zink plating.

The new 74-76 US license plate holders from BMW MT come painted semi gloss black. p# 51 13 1 830 807.
