Took my '72 Verona tii out quite a bit this weekend here in Norman, OK.

On Friday I went to the liquor store to pick up some Full Sail Amber. As I'm returning to my car a guy slowly cruises by with his window down and says to me "Man, I love that Bimmer". I say "thank you" and he continues to rubber neck as he leaves the parking lot.

Then on Saturday I'm at a nearby convenience store getting a cold soda pop and the twenty-something year old attendant behind the counter looks at me and then looks out the window and says "Is that a 2002"? Surprised, I said "yes". From that point on we engage in a discussion extolling the virtues of the driving machines from Bavaria.

Ain't it fun?!!

yes it is. i never get tired of compliments. recently i was driving on the expressway and out of the corner of my eye i see a *flash*. i look over and some guys in a new mustang were snapping pics of the car and thumbs up-ing. they then slowed down, got behind and came up on the other side and took some more. it's fun driving an attention getter but you never want to be picking your nose while driving one. someone is always looking!

I don't know of this gentleman, but I do know of a man that has a private museum in Lawton, OK. My dad recently visited that museum because one of his cars is my dad's old Ford dragster complete and totally restored. It was quite legendary in these parts.

Anyway, my dad went to vist it and said it was beyond belief the things he had. He estimated the collection to have a value of well over $1 million.

Of course the best part was that my dad said, despite this man's love for classic American cars, what does he drive now? A new 7 series! Oh yea.

Hey Bimmersooner, I'm originally from Tulsa. Does that guy that lives on the South side of Walmart in Norman still have all those '02s in his back yard? I test drove a Verona square light he was selling once. Can't remember his name.

"Orange Julius" doesn't seem to generate a lot of attention on the Interstate running from Grand Rapids to Chicago.

There was a bit "shadowing" from the usual, lazy drivers in minivans and SUVs who use me instead of cruise control...

...so when I feel a bit "hemmed in," I just stop at a rest area or something, just to break up the party...

The new Bimmer owners in their X5s and the women execu-types in their new 3-Series pay me no notice until I squeeze the throttle a bit, jump out ahead of them, squirting through traffic, then cooling down when there was a bit more breathing room in traffic. They really don't know it's a BMW, let alone the forerunner to their plusher, less visceral personal transportion.

One toll-taker on the Tri-State (294) looked my car over from front to back, smiled and said "nice car car...very nice car..."

...he might not have know what it is either, but he at least had *some* appeciation for it...

Cheers!

the best one for me was one evening i was on my way home from work and was being tailed by an E30 M3 and pulled into a parking lot because my cell started to ring (was expecting a work call)... so i answer the phone and noticed the m3 guy pulled in behind me and parked next to me. It wasn't the call i was expecting, so when i hung up - the guy called me out of the car and we talked for a while ... he in the gorgeous E30 and me in my old rust bucket with a rusted out center res that sounded like a chopper.

good times - i miss my 02

Currently 02-less.

Wow! News to me. Don't know the guy, but would love to know who it was. How long ago are we talking?

David Herr, a well-known independent BMW mechanic here, has a shop and has lots of E21s, E30s, E23s and E28s sitting around. And every once in a while an '02.

My original '02, a 1972 malaga that I owned in high school and early college (from 1984-1988) was owned by a man named John Brock in Duncan, OK. A visionary indeed, he had two '02s (the '72 and a '75) that he purchased original. He understood, recognized and appreciated them when few else did at that time. I still have the original dealer brochures he got when he first bought the '72.

And I always thank my dad for having the awareness to know about the '02 when I was in high school. I, admittedly as a teenager in 1984, did not. I remember the first time I saw the car (which he surprised me with) I thought: "what a nerdmobile". Round tail lights, chrome bumpers, bus steering wheel and all. But as soon as I drove it, I was hooked. And the rest is history and wonderful, wonderful memories.

Norman is my hometown, and graduated from OU. David Herr did extensive work to my previous 02 that I had when I was attending OU to include installing a 5 speed. That 02 was killed about 12 years ago by a lady who ran a red light here in So Cal but many a part from that car lives on.

Gordon,

I can't seem to PM you, so tell me....what years were you in Norman, what kind of '02 did you have etc.

I was a freshman at OU in the Fall of 1986. If you were there at that time and saw a malaga running around it was me most likely.

Me thinks his name might have been "Gray", but it's been several years since I met him. He may not live there anymore as he was somewhat disenchanted with the Sam Walton machine that set up shop in the field across from his house. Nice guy. I think the dealer did all the work on his car. It was a red square light with painted bumpers, headers, tinted glass and recarro seats.

Oh, by the way....Go Canes!!
