My '67 1602 is all original except the valve cover which came with a rebuilt head. I have heard the early covers were different but I don't know in what way or how to find one to buy since I don't have a picture to go by. Any engine compartment shots that show the cover would be appreciated. I think it was updated in mid 68 or 69 to the common style you normally see. I also believe there is a larger BMW roundel cast toward the front of the car section of the cover but not sure on this. Thanks!

I also thought that the early castings dont have the horizontal stripes cast as well...not sure though.

Hows that car coming along anyway?

I have 2 early cars at the house. the 67 has a VERY plain valve cover, I think it looks better then the later units. Going from memory, and I can take a pic for you later, it just has BMW on it and the 1,2,3,4 on the bottom. Again going from my memory and I have been stuck at my fokes for 3 days sick so take it with a grain of salt. If you dont come up with one to see shoot me an email. My early 68 has a different cover on it with the usual bands. these valve covers can get warped or easly replaced as they can go bad.

Hey Ashish,

Its going pretty good, got new brakes, lines, Bilstein struts. Motor and trans mounts, flex disk and center bearing, all the rubber stuff that wore out over time. I now need to do the diff and subframe mounts, hopefully that will resolve my last driveline clunk that won't go away. Almost done with the door panel resto, and wool squarewaeve carpet is due next week from seamsperfect. Got the headliner all redone, perfect euro dash is in the mail, and got the replacement seat material sewed and ready to install on the front seats. Chrome exterior trim is all new. Engine is deatailed out nicely. Its looking good, I'm trying to get it all done for Concorso Italiano in mid August.

That is the perfecto- candidate! Rare color, and has that unique charm.

Have you heard from Roland in a while?

I think they're the same ones that were used on the NK 4 door sedans. They were used on some of the very early 68s--I remember some early 68 2002s with the smooth valve cover--then the more familiar cover with the lines and BMW letters was introduced sometime during the 1968 production run. As usual, BMW just used parts 'till they ran out of 'em.

cheers

I just saw Roland yesterday, had to return a special tool I borrowed. He's doing great, he's very impressed with the car so far.

Great, that must be it! That's kind of what Sam thought too, plain cover without lines. Much appreciated!
