I figured what the hell, I've owned my tii for 14 years and have always wanted to try a driving school. I know I need a helmet (my motorcycle helmet is too old), and I plan on having a shop check / prep the car before the tech inspection. I'm not looking to break any records, the car is pretty much bone stock, just looking to have fun.

Any comments / advice on insurance issues (I'm sure my policy prevents anything - timed or not - on a race track) would be helpful.

David, Pocono is a great track to do your first event at. I should be there, hopefully with my 72 tii. I've driven the track many times and I've driven with many different track organizations. In our area we are fortunate that both the Porsche Club and DelVal BMW CCA put on driver's ed events of the highest quality. After doing several of their events I had a noticeable advantage when getting my SCCA racing license! Have you ever run an autocross before? Great prep for doing a Driver's Ed. Joe

Thanks for the response, but help me out.... why would Lime Rock be more "fun" - better track?, better instructors?, clowns and dancing bears? I may have a conflict with the Pocono date and may have to cancel, the backup being Lime Rock. Though two days at Lime Rock would be about $70 more and much much further from Philadelphia, I would consider it. Any input you may have would be helpful.

IF COST IS A FACTOR - time to find another hobby.

The Instructors at Lime Rock come from BMWCCA and PCA and are to the man & woman excellent, patient, polite, well trained, experienced, mature - - and the track is WAY nicer than featureless pocono, a nicer drive to and from the track, a park like setting with green grass and in the fall, fantastic foliage - just a dam great atmosphere.

Lime Rock is more fun to drive in a low HP car. You will get bored at Pocono real fast in a car that won't even hit 100MPH on the long straight. Spend the money and camp out at Lime Rock if you get the chance. One other note, don't buy a motorcycle helmet, they are not allowed. You will need at least a snell 95 or newer. Look for one at Racer Wholesale or a similar on line racer sales site.
