Hi all, the distance between the trans fill plug and the trans tunnel is pretty close. What have others done to get in there to remove it? I was going to just cut a 1 or 2 inch section of 17mm allen wrench, but I'm thinking it's probably too hard to cut with my chop saw. Not sure though. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Robert

I have a variety of tools for geting into those tight spots on trannies. I have a specal wrench at the shop thats an open ended box wrench with a 17mm allen in the end. It works great and is long enough to give me enough leverage. I also use 2 box wrenches on drain plugs that are 17 or 19mm heads to gain enough leverage to open the plug. also stashed in my box at work is a set of allen wrenches with the short ends ground down low. you need to make sure when you grind or cut them you keep it flat. The big key is you will need leverage to break the fill plug loose. You dont have to cut very much off as you can install the allen at an angle and pop it in.

ALWAYS undo the fill plug first before draining the oil. DUHHHHHH

I forgot about another setup I have at the shop, wonder if I have enough tools yet... naaa I have some cut sections of allen wrenches. I then slide them though my corisponding box end or open end wrench. A gear wrench is great here. you do have to be carefull that you dont walk the allen out. when i do this I usualy keep a pry bar on the allen to keep is square in the hole.

Good stuff, thanks guys. I'm going to call my local VW shop to see if they have the 17mm allen socket thing in stock. That seems to be the simplest solution.

Thanks again,

Robert

knock the insert out. Use the insert with a 17mm boxend and you've also got a new 17mm 6 point socket that will become a favorite. Double nutting a bolt will get the easy ones out and will bust knuckles on the hard ones.
