BMW 2002 FAQ,

First please excuse my post if there are problems with the pics I tried to attach. Its my first time so be gentle with me.

My 76 2002 auto quit on me a week or two ago. It has a Solex 32/32 DIDTA carb. When it stopped, I had way to much gas getting to my plugs.

When I looked in the float bowl, I saw the 2 pieces in the photos resting on the bottom.

Hopefully you can see the attached photos.

I have a few questions regarding my problem.

Has anyone had this problem? I can see where the long piece came from. It is a press fit. How can I make it fit snugly again?

Does anyone know where the steel ball goes? I assume it goes under the long piece but I am not sure.

Any help appreciated. Thank you.

Hi, It's been 20 years since I messed with a solex, but I just happened to buy another 02 with a solex on it & I need to go through it, I got the carb kit, but haven't had time to do it yet. I can see in the exploded view on the kit, the little ball is the check valve for the accelorator pump. In the exp. view, it looks like it has a brass piece that has a slot for screwdriver on it, so if that is the part that came loose, the ball goes in the hole.

Oh forgot, to make it fit snugly, I don't remember the trick from 20 yrs ago, but today I'd say score the brass part on the bottom just a little on opposite sides, so it will have some resistance when you push it back in. Any kinda glue idea would be bad, its sitting in gas all the time. Might be able to peen the outside of the hole with a punch before you put in in also. This was likely making your accel pump pour gas into the carb all the time with the ball out of place. Get a carb kit from mesa performance in CA or someone else, about $ 22, you'll get a new pump diaphragm, new needle & seat & gaskets. Used to be able to get just the pump diaphragm, but I don't think you can anymore. It's common for those to get tired & wear out.

DanOKC,

Thanks for the reply. You are correct that the brass thing has a screw in it. I assume that you meant to drop the ball into the hole before I press the brass thing in, correct?

Yes, from what I can tell, that's the place it goes. I had this problem long time ago & it's a simple check valve for the injection pump, but when that brass piece comes out, the ball gets loose & the carb gets flooded.
