I took off the small honeycombed airfilters off and now it won't go over 45 mph. The opening of the filter is smaller than the opening of the airhorn so it think that has something to do with it. The filter must have been chocking down the carb. I believe I must be way too lean. Anybody else use the filters? They look great, but now I question their performance.

You havent put a bend in any of the linkages when you were removing them or no unwanted object has gone in the intake to stop them from working right?

I had a similar issue with a filter I had. The mechanic at the time had tightened a pin holding my air cleaner on so far that it squashed the lid down blocking my butterfly from opening all the way. A bit of roadside head scratching, a maglite and a leatherman and I was back on the road in 10 minutes - hopefully yours is as simple.

Vacuum lines are all in place? (edit - not really close by)

I dont understand how the removal of the filters could affect it so much... that is why I was wondering if it was something related to the removal process rather than actual function after removal?

I could understand the runlike crap/die on WOT, with a clogged paper element filter removed (too lean - if was tuned with filter on), but not a tea strainer like those. You must have mucked something when removing them, or as TMK says, somethings been sucked in there.

Did you try putting them back on to see what happens? David Vizard says those filters dont flow anything (not enough surface area) and disturb the intake airflow greatly. I was wondering if they were choking down the carbs and as you said, now your are way too lean. What are you running for chokes and main jets?

Here is some more info on the motor:

2.5 liter

10.5:1 compression

304 cam

ported and polished

DCOE 48's

I was doing an experiment and put in the jets from a pair tisa carbs that I have. 125 main with 170 air correction. I normally run 170 mains with 210 air correction.

With he Tisa jets and fiters on the car runs okay, but without the filters it barely goes at all. I almost hit my head on the stearing wheel when it went flat.

Like I said earlier, the opening of the filter is much smaller then the airhorn itself. They do look good.

I guess it's time to put on my early Alpina airtube.

When I was fitting the 40dcoe's, couldn't get any power no matter what the jetting UNTIL I put the air filter housing back on! Then I was able to achieve some smooth power.

I know I'm not smart enough to say why though!

Norm,

if the car runs well with airfilter and runs like crap withoutm then your airfilters are crap. They are blocking way too much air and when you take them off the the car runs very lean. So, stop driving it without filters. Put them back on, cal,l Schatz and Krum, talk to stew and schedule dyno time. In a couple hours your car will run better then you ever imagined.

Your reply is so true.

That is what I did today, I went to Shatz&Krum and made an appointment for the end of this week for the dyno. Oh, by the way, that is what Stuart said about being lean and having lame filters. I mentioned how quick your car is and how fast it revs and sounds. I also said that Ali beat me by over two seconds and that needs to stop. Sorry Ali!

Now for the best part: he flew his gas powered helicopter and did all sorts of crazy up-side-down tricks. Lots of fun!
