I'm sure both items have been discuss at nausium(sp.) but opinions on:

1.Dino vs.Synthetic oil on my 72 tii.

2.Redline waterwetter.

I've used both for years with British and watercooler V.W.s with good results

thanks

I changed to Mobil 1 15W-50 after the head work, and run Water Wetter in the E30 & E28. Temp has been fine in the tii with Curt's 3-row radiator, so I haven't used it in there.

There's no problem changing from dino to synthetic anytime - benefits at start-up - but, because it flows so well, a small oil leak MAY become a larger leak!

Thanks John,I have used synth. oil for many years but had some concern about the k-fisch pump and synth.oil.So far no cooling issues, but a little lower is always nice in the heat.

hey jonathan,

i'd say that if you just rebuilt the engine, there are no problems using synth. otherwise, for a higher mileage engine, just stick with good dino oil. i use castrol 20w-50 in mine and change every 3k. it's cheap insurance. also, carl nelson sells the mahle/mann oil filters at bimmerdoc.com for a good price as well. i get mine through CDOC's worldpac account...just bought 10 of them, so i should be good for a while!

btw, got your message last night. we're getting ready for a weekend party, so we were out late buying beer and bbq fixins. i'll give you a buzz tonite when we get home.

Thanks Brad,I'm the type of guy who over maintains, changing synth every 3K,I know thats nuts...w/ oem filters. My motor was rebuilt around 14k ago, so its still on the fresh side.My concern was w/ the K-fisch pump more than anything.

Speak w/ you soon.

oh yeah, one other thing. i've read here on the boards once or twice that the redline water wetter sometimes causes a weird, oily condition with certain kinds of coolant. not sure if it does that with the blue BMW coolant, but it might be worth doing a little experiment before adding it to your system. i've been holding off adding the bottle i have until i do a flush and refill with the good BMW blue stuff.

Brad good thought, the radiator is going to be flushed next week along with a rear-subframe rebush and resto.

1.Dino vs.Synthetic oil on my 72 tii. = EITHER IS o.k. - so long as your top oil weight number is 50 (15/50, 20/50)

2.Redline waterwetter. = don't bother - use BMW approved antifreeze in the correct ratio and change it every 2 to 3 years.

Made by the same folks, but at a bit of a savings. No Saab dealer around here, so I haven't checked it out.

Thanks for your help, I tried google before I asked, too much junk and advertising to wade through. Very frustrating. I guess I will call my busy dealership though I didn't want to pull anyone away from the counter.

brad.

I couldn't run mine with Castor 20W-50. I'd get bad smoking on deceleration after high speed, e.g. coming off an exit from the interstate. Value guide issue.

I switched to Mobile 1 synthetic and the problem completely went away.
