my car wont start. it turns over but when i turn the key 3/4 the way i dont hear the fuel pump, the grid in the tank is clear (just so you know). i suspect my fuel pump finally gave out on me. in my manual the fuel filter is right next to the radiator and there is no such thing on my car. so basically is this a fuel pump or a fuel filter and if it is the filter where is the main fuel pump that gave out. i have a tii. i belive the tii has 3 pumps:the tank the main one and the kuuuuggggelfisssshhhhccheeerrrr. the picture is right next to my differential

I think you maybe need to get some better sway bars – might improve things, no? Sorry... am I a thread or soo too late?

In your picture, that is a fuel filter, it looks like it is where the fuel pump should be. In a tii, the fuel filter is next to the radiator, the fuel pump is next to the rear differential, above the rear swing arm. So where is your fuel pump??? You only have only have one fuel pump and filter on a tii. You need a fuel pump to get the fuel to the Kugelfisher injection pump. Their is no fuel pump in the tank.

here is what your fuel system is suppose to look like

You will get sticker shock if you go to the dealer and price a tii fuel pump. I recommend you send your fuel pump (check your electrical connections first) to Mesa Performance, they have rebuilt ones for $121.50 exchange. I have a Mesa fuel pump in my tii for over $2 years now, no problems what so ever. http://www.mesaperformance.com/web_store/web_store.cgi?page=bmwcat/fuelpump.html&category=yes&cart_id=5224312.22713

Keith Kreeger used a later model fuel pump on his tii, his writeup is featured on his website, my2002tii.com, that's another alternitive.

ALWAYS suspect the fuel filters.

They are cheap enough and you probably were needing to replace it anyways.

After that, I would do as you have with checking the screen on the fuel pick up. I would also make sure there are no blockages elsewhere on the lines. This is the time you should be looking at all your rubber fuel lines. If you are going to be disconnecting them, it might be a good time to just replace them.

There are some tests you can run to see if your fuel pump is putting out enough. I think they are in the McCartney book. Be sure to have a fire extinguisher on hand if you are messing with the fuel in the engine compartment. None of us want to read the "after the fire" thread.

What year was your car?

I don't know if the later 74 on cars are different, but on my 72tii the fuel pump and accumulator is in the same location as the filter in your picture, with my filter being next to the radiator up front. (correction, the fuel pump/accumulator is under the rear of the car on the passenger side)If these are all things that were in place from the previous owner, don't always believe they did things correctly.

A PO may have done the E30 fuel pump there. It's hard to tell from the picture, but is that filter on the passenger side of the side? The normal tii pump should be over there, it can be easy to miss if you aren't looking for it because it gets covered in grim.

There usually is a filter next to the radiator, but my 74 actually had it more under the battery tray, I think a PO did some replacing of fuel lines and came up short.

The fuel pump should be on the opposite side of the car, about the same location.

Fuel line comes from the tank and passes through a hole in the trunk floor to get to the pump. From there it passes across the car (where that fuel filter is on yours) to the metal line that runs to the front of the car. There is supposed to be a short rubber line that connects the hard line to a filter by the radiator, then another that goes to the injection pump.

The fuel pump should be attached to a large (pint or so) canister that acts as a reservoir and a noise dampener. If you find the pump and it doesn't run, you could verify that it is actually getting 12V at the wires and tap on it gentley with a hammer to try to free it up.
