Replacing the lower trim piece on the '73 door

I have new metal clips and plastic clips along with a new lower trim piece.

What is the best method to replace this trim? How should the clips be aligned vertically or horizontally?

The clown that painted the car painted over the clips so of course the trim piece fell off.

One day the identity of the clown will be revealed when the time is right and the venue is appropriate.

Thanks for your help. I'd like to do this this weekend so timely advice is appreciated in advance.

Regards,

Ivanj

The only way to do it proper is to remove the inside door panel. It's easy to do. Pull on the panel at the bottom & sides and loosen from the door skin on three sides, with the top remaining snug. Then push up to "unclip" at the top. Yoy may have to give the panel a hard pop from the bottom a few times. You'll feel it when it starts to come loose.

Once the panel is off, remove the plastic (acella cloth - technical name) - most people call it plastic....this helps reduce moisture from getting into the mechanism inside the door when it rains.

Then you will see the plastic from the holes that the clips reside that hold the moulding. Pop them all out (I usually use a phillips screw driver)...there will be a small plastic insert in each one...easiest to pop them out from the inside (since they are slightly tapered when inserting from the outside) - actually it probably doesn't make much diff. Just get em out.

Clean up and lube door and window mechanism when you are in there, replacing grommets on mechanism, etc if needed.

Your window needs to be "up" when doing this to access everything.

Remove all old clips as I said...clean, up, install new clips from the outside. The metal stud and nut goes on the end inside the door jam...you will see the nut. It holds the trim in place from sliding.

I always insert the plastic clips in the moulding first and then line up with all holes...it's pretty simple from there on.

If you need further help, just ask. As you can see, even simple tasks take some knowledge. Once you've done it, you'll know the drill easy.

John
