question about fuses

I did a circuit test on the fuses. I got signal for all the fuses in the bottom row but no signal for every fuse in the top row. I know its not that the fuses are bad because I changed them and still no signal. Do you have any idea on what it could be? maybe the fuse box or wiring?

Take all the fuses out and give the terminals a good cleaning(on both ends). This is probably the most common cause on bad conenctions at the fuse box. (make sure you keep track where the different fuses go if you don't have the fuse decal inside the hood)

Resistance? Voltage? Other? Describe what you did.

Some of the fuses are always hot (powered). Some are hot with the key in the Radio position. Some hot with the key in the Ignition position. Some hot when the light switch is on.

what I did was test the fuses with the device that looks like a screwdriver were I connect the ground in and when I touch a fuse that has current it lights up. I tested all the fuses with the key turned to the right to the position right before cranking the engine. Should I test the top fuses with no key in the ignition or turned partially?

You tested for voltage at the fuses with a test light. That doesn't really tell you anything about the condition of the fuses. Since you replaced the fuses, it's unlikely any of them is bad.

There are ways to test the fuses, but they be confusing, and it's easier and more reliable just to replace the suspect fuse.

What year is your car? The fuse wiring is different for different years.

What is the electrical problem you are trying to solve?

I just wan't to make sure there is current going through each fuse. Currently the heater and defroster aren't working and the right turn signal light isn't working either.

Check both front and rear bulbs as follows:

1. Turn on parking lights (pull light switch out to first notch).

2. Verify that front parking lights are on dim.

3. Verify that tail lights are on dim.

4. Turn on hazard lights.

5. Verify that front park/turn lights alternate between dim and bright.

6. Verify that tail lights remain a steady dim.

7. Verify that rear turn signal lights alternate between off and bright.

You can do steps 4-7 with the turn signal switch instead, but it's faster with the hazard switch. Chances are you have a bad or wrong bulb, poor socket, or bad ground connection on the right side.

When you say heater and defroster, I assume you mean the fan is not moving air. Can you hear the fan running? Did it ever work? Open the hood and find the fan at the center of the firewall. Reach in with a screwdriver or piece of wire and see if the fan spins freely.

The heater fan gets power through Fuse 6 if you have a 6-fuse car, Fuse 9 on an early 12-fuse car, or Fuse 4 on a late 12-fuse car. To test the fuse, switch on the ignition, and switch on the heater fan. Connect the black lead of your test light to the negative post of the battery. Touch the tip of the test light to one end of the heater fuse; repeat for the other end of the fuse.

- If it lights for both ends, the fuse is good.

- If it lights at only one end of the fuse, the fuse is blown.

- If it lights at neither end of the fuse, the wiring upstream of the fuse is bad.

You still haven't revealed the model year of your car. Do you expect me to spell out the wiring details and troubleshooting procedure for each model variation, or do you think it would be easier for me to give the info for just your car?
