What color was the original underbody of a 2002

Hey all,

I often wonder what the original underbody color was for a 2002.

I notice that a lot of the 02faqer's paint their "body color" but I was wondering what they came from factory like... is it shutz in black or was it factory "body color" and mine is just REALLY dirty under there!

I will tidy my underneath when I get a chance, and I would like to do it in a factory style.

Thanks,

Todd

Body color on the undercarriage is nice, pretty when new, but very impractical in my opinion. I paint all my cars underneath with Wurth Underbody Spray. You can still eat off of it when clean and you don't have to feel so anal about causing any scratches!

I'm sure they painted it at the factory originally because it was more efficient that way, with 02's being of unibody construction and all. It was much easier to paint the whole thing the same color. They didn't worry about rust back then either, and they SHOULD HAVE. Undercoating the underbody definitely helps prevent rust.

So, I vote for being practical...undercoat the underside! :-)

Happy 02ing,

John

Judging from the undersides of the original-paint cars I've seen, the actual floor/trans tunnel of the car is primer gray. Not sure if it's the dip tank primer, or the sealer/finishing coat of primer that the top coat color goes on. The edges of the floor/trunk floor/etc. get oversprayed with body color from the painting of the rocker panels and rear panel. This pretty much is the same on BMWs built through at least the late '80s, as far as I can tell. Wheel wells are sprayed body color.

The tranny tunnel on Hugo was repainted the color of the body - "Chamonix", along with the frame rails back to where they tie into the floor pan. Looks cool in my opinion...the rest of the underbody is Wurth Flat Black Textured.. I absolutely hate the wheel wheels being the color of the body - my personal perference is to have black in there.

I think the correct color for the underside is "Oily grime". I'll ask my Kelly-Moore paint guy if he can match the color.

"grime" is actually the name of a paint that was used for weathering models. They also had "dust" "rust" & "mud".

It's the UNDERSIDE of your car! I may get anal about originallity, but that tops it. Just undercoat it, paint it, and then drive the car to the point of being VERY glad that you did the undercoating.

remember all those roll up shots from the carpet cam? It made my back ache just to look at the state of those show cars, underneath. For real-world use, however, I like the idea of painting a color that , when sorta clean, can contrast the color of suspension parts, fluid leaks, and fasteners. Undercoating sounds like a very wise move. I can hear the "Fargo" new car sale debate now....

I've noticed that, too-

they got color into a lot of places (dash, inside of rocker, etc)

but the center of the floorpan, rear bulkhead, etc was primer.

On the early (pre- 70) cars it's a warm grey...

All the ones I've seen with original paint have had their undersides in body color.

Uh-oh. Hope someone undercoated mine, cause it's as black as it gets under there. Must be, as I powerwash the undercarriage thoroughly every time I wash it.
