Why my brakes were smokin' on the Alpine 500

The day before the Alpine 500, I had my '02's brake master and booster replaced. My booster was floating in brake fluid it was so bad.

Well, off I went and noticed a bad smell. Someone was cooking their brakes. And that someone was me. Here are pics of my front wheels.

The black areas use to be silver/grey.

Why was I cooking my brakes?

Well, before she put the 2002 up for sale, my car's PO had a brake job done on the car. Since I purchased the car in May 2005, I've had a lot replaced/fixed. And after the new master and Booster, my mechanic and I learned that the clip circled in red

had been put on the front calipers BACKWARDS!

Thus the squeel, the smoke, and the smell.

so was it rubbing on something? What brand/type of brake pads did you use? Cheapo pads or good pads? Even without the spring the pads are located by the pins and shouldn't have been rubbing wrong anywhere, but maybe the springs placed as yours were kept the pads against the rotors with more pressure than normal causing excessive wear and heat.

Because the spring was on backwards, the pins were not seated correctly on the spring. This caused the spring to not be in the normal position and caused the spring to rub against the rotor (both passenger and driver's side wheels). *Squeel*

With the spring on backwards, this caused more pressure on the pads than normal and the pads would not release like they should have. *Smell* then *Smoke*
