Looking at a '95 318ti...

Profile gasket is a concern on M42 motors. Apparently the ti's had cheaply made interior and the stitching is known for coming undone so I would check the condition of the interior closely. www.318ti.org is a good place for more info.

Anything I need to look for?

After five years and 40k miles, (64k on the car), I have little to report. A friend's had the profile gasket problem, but that is all I know of. Great cars. I love em!

if it feels like a dog, it is one. I own a 94 318i (same engine and almost same car). After 190k miles I have a long list on unschedule maintenance items: fuel pump and heater fan! that's it, car still runs pretty much like when we bought it 150k miles ago!

if they haven't been replaced already, they will need to be eventually. my buddy has had to do both on his '95. it's a really common problem on the E36, but the compact apparently is worse since the doors are a bit longer and the regulator is just a touch longer as well.

the tech at our local BMW dealer said their isn't much that can be done and that attempts to shore up or strengthen the regulators just prolong the inevitable.

other than the few things mentioned, they are pretty good cars. i've been snooping for one for a while. and when you've gotten sick of it, you can drop in a supercharger and fall in love with it all over again!
