Reinstalled my rebuilt head, car wont start..

Had my head completely rebuilt by my work, new everything and a full valve job it looks awesome. Anyway, we reinstalled it at a friends house and now the car wont start. It cranks but it wont catch, and the carbs were puffing smoke like crazy, leading me to believe the timing is way off. Has anyone ever had this happen to them before. When we pulled the head it was at TDC, but I still dont know what to do.

You could be 180 out on the timing, I helped a freind get his motor going after a engine and box swap recently and the the timing marks were 180 degrees out for some reason of sourse we never thought to mark up the dissy before removing it, had us stumped for about two days, You never know who was at your engine before you. What we did in the end was swap the leads around 180 degrees and hey presto it started, then took our timing from no 4 instead od Number one, bit confusing but it worked,

so insteaad of 1,3,4,2 on the dissy cap move no four lead to no one and so on so that its

4,2,1,3.

Worth a try we had exactly the same synthoms, huge backfires and atomised fuel coming back out of the carbs!

I concur, it's happened to me before and I had installed the dist 180 degrees off.
