engine and drivetrain trouble yanking my auto transmission in 76 2002

dear bmw 2002 faq,

i'm in the process of pulling the auto transmission from my 76 2002. As far as I know I have all the fasteners removed, including the 4 bolts connecting the torque converter.

the exaust and drive shaft are out.

its real loose and it has pulled away from the motor a couple of inches. trouble is that i cant seem to get the back lip of the trans over a bar that is part of the front steering.

i'm not sure what the name of the bar is but it has what look to be tie rod ends on it and i do not want to remove it if i do not have to. my clymer manual does not say it has to come out.

any ideas? it wants to drop but its stuck. please advise. thank you.

moves the tie rod forward an inch or so.

I agree. Crank the steering full left or full right. Either one should work.

right you were. i turned the steering and it dropped right out. thank you.
