My mechanic who was repairing my newly aquired 71 Bmw 2002 so that it would past the safety inspection has stopped work on it, rejected because the rear brake adjusters (as well as the brake line into the cylinders) were rusted solid. He indicated that to 'break' the rust, would probably mean he would have to break the adjusters and brake-line. His shop is just not set-up to handle the repair. I know the brakeline can be repaired or replaced at a shop that specializes in barakes, but I am having problems locating information (or parts) on the adjusters. I already have have new shoes and slave cylinders (yet to be installed), and the drum has been turned.

Any advice?

Dismantle rear brakes.

Use a torch and with lots of quality penetrating oil (PB Blaster, Wurth Rust Off).

With some heat and patience you can free them up again.

A good shop should be able to do this in an hour, its not difficult.

The rear wheel cylinder with more penetrating oil and patience can also be taken apart. You may need to soak it once a day for a week.

a good open end wrench on the hex and vice grips on the other side, begin to work it back and forth until the friction is about 10 ft/lbs, it will tighten up as it cools, then is the time for rost-off, which i follow with hhs2000, applied to both sides,and flush off the residue on the shoe side only

I was looking at the FAQ article on replacing the originals with 320i from a bone yard. Actually, I would like to have this thing on the road as a daily driver before I do that kind of modification.

2002 AD does not show the rear plate/adjusters in their online catalog, so I will send them an email inquiry.

This weekend, I will try to loosen the items up. I used my mechanic for 15 years, and he has never let me down, so I beleive him when he indicates the toughness of the job ahead of me.

Sent an email to your gbraden at visi dot net email. I have a set you can have if your mechanic can pull the 36mm nut off the hub and use a puller to get the hub off.
