How realistic is the job of swapping out an egine from a 1972 2002 and putting in a Tii motor from the same year? I found a cheap and in great condition Tii motor locally and want to know if the job would be doable. Thanks

I'm doing a similar swap (its been on hold with all the rain and work -- hoping to get it finished here after Taxes finally get done)

Anyway, its not a huge deal. You've got to replace the fuel pump with a high pressure type and probably run a new line up front. You might need to fart around with the throttle linkage some and the standard tii air intake won't fit due to the different brake booster.

I was just going to use a cheap K & N filter till I got around to changing the booster, and I'm using an in tank pump from an e30 to power the Kugelfischer

Now I assume you're going to keep the tii fuel injection intact -- swapping that over to carbs or EFI is yet another complication. If the existing fuel injection system is functional and the rest of the engine is good it shouldn't be a huge deal.

I hope not cos like I said i'm doing the same thing

OH. The other complication is if you want to use a strict tii cold start system. The TII has a thermo time switch that squirts extra fuel via the cold start injector when the temp is cold. If you want that to work like a tii you need that thermo-time switch (which are hard to find).

My plan (and this is done a lot when the thermo-timer fails) is to just hard wire the cold start injector to a button in the cockpit and push that when starting cold.

Do a search for thermotime or cold start tii -- there are a number of good posts that describe that system. Me, i'd just hard wire it & not worry about wiring it up true tii style

best of luck!!

Edit: also you'll need a tii starter and tii alternator (i'm pretty sure you do).. if those come with the engine you're set!

ya i'm not 100% sure it will work. I've got two pumps.. one from a 320is and one from a later 318

the 320is pump has a much larger fuel outlet tube.. nearly 1/2 an inch. I think its up to it. I figure i'll try it and see.. but likesay a real tii pump or a 5 series pump (I think it is .. as seen on www.my2002tii.com) might be more the thing to use. Since i've got those e30 pumps i was going to give them a try rather than shell out more dosh

U sure that the alt is different? Other than mounting in a different area, I think it is the same (someone correct me).

Is the starter different due to the little support bracket attachment points, or...?

Cheers,

Stop reading this! Don't you have anything better to do?? :P
Two running things. Two broken things.

The alternator housing is different. The upper mounting 'ear' is longer to fit into the tii bracket. As for the output, I believe it is the same as all later 02's , but may be higher that the early non-tiis.

the alternator is different. I remember trying to put a tii alternator into my 1970 and it wouldn't fit right

tii alternator part# 12311354152

2002 alternator part# 12311353422

the FAQ alternator swap faq has some clues (it applies ot only non tii s)

For the starter the solonoid is on a different side. I remember trying to put a tii starter into a non-tii and it didn't want to fit ( soon after I started separating my tii parts from non=tii cos I kept doing that!!)

Now I might be smoking crack here.. cos www.realoem.com shows the tii starter and non-tii starter are teh same part#

I have both tii and non-tii starters down at the shop.. i'm gonna check em out later on today and see whats what

The starters are probably the same.

The rear mounting bracket for the tii starter will have the extra support for the intake stuff.
