During the Antique Car Show I participated last February, I took advantage that 2 of the 3 people authorized to inspect cars for Classic and Antique tag requests were there and I had them inspect my car and sign my Special tag Request. To my surprise, my '02 passed as a "Classic" instead of a "Modified Classic". (The inspector must have been in a good mood cause you all know my wheels aren't OE nor the 32/36 Carb!

I now pay $135 a year instead of $169 for anual "permit" (Including State Mandate Insurance Fee). It's not much for the saving but for the prestige ;-p

Just wanted to share ...

Dang!

$169 for annual registration?

Ours are loooow here in CA, but I guess thats just because we deal in bulk for car registrations.

Will the inspectors stop by your house to make sure you haven'c swapped out a side mirror or anything like that?

do you pay in CA for anual registration fee?

It seems to me that if our government can't rip us off 200%+ in any way they can their not happy! (Sorry for the note but I have to pay my taxes next week and I'm far from a refund ... again!)

Such is life!

Yes, around 50 bucks, as long as you don't have vanity plates or such.

My spin is that car registration nets so much money for the state that they will do almost anything to keep your car on the road and getting their share.

The first one is accident medical insurance for the anyone involved in an accident (drivers, passengers or pedestrians)) which is actually pretty good. This is $35 per year.

One of my employees' son had a terrible accident about a year and a half ago (5:00 AM, coming from a party, no seatbelts, speeding) which has required over $400,000 in medical expenses and the insurance has covered everything to date.

The other insurance is a mandatory liability insurance that covers up to $3000 in damages and costs $99 per year. So the renewal actually costs $35.00.

That is one of the reasons (the main one being widespread corruption)why we have such an outdated road system with almost round-the-clock traffic jams and potholes the size of the Moon's craters.

Plus we have a government that will probably become insolvent in mid-May because the legislative and executive branches can't make up their minds about fiscal and tax reform.

Sorry for the rant, but, like Victor and most hard-working citizens of the island, I am not getting back even a small fraction of my tax money's worth.

Anyways, congrats on the new tags, Victor! Been thinking of getting some vanity tags for miine. Any suggestions on what to write on them?

On a contract job in MS the cops swept through the apartment parking area and gave me a warning to get my 70 1600-2 registered locally. I asked around and the fellows at work said I could get antique plates for only $10 more than standard plates. Iwas tempted to do it but was convinced after he said although it is ten dollars more the plates are permanent. That's right one time fee of $65 for evvver!!!

I left the state plates on the car no renuall stickers ever no fees ever. That was 4 years ago. Since I never have to reregister it I never get anything from MS. Having fun

You guys have it so easy, registration in Victoria Australia is $563 AUD per year (about $410 USD) and our petrol is $1.25 per Litre ($3.46 USD per gallon). And we have the best roads in the country. Beaner7102

Wow, last time I paid rego - last September - I was pissed to pay $513!

So I should expect more cost!?! Excellent!

This price however does include a compulsory Transport Accident insurance - where the government pays for your medical and rehabilitation costs in major accidents and will also pay out in the case of death caused in the road - bike, motorbike, car, truck, pedestrian etc. So all is not bad.

Victoria (our state) has one of the lowest rates of motor vehicle deaths in the world and is used in case studies throughout the world. You cannot get your drivers licence until you are 18 years old and are on a probationary permit for 3 years - where you not allowed to have any alcohol in your system and are limited to 5 demerit points in a 12 month period.

We have one of the highest rates of revenue from driving offenses in the world - both unmarked and marked highway patrol cars, with radar/laser technology, fixed and mobile speed camera's, etc.

Some still manage to avoid them all and enjoy the road :-)

license plate deal around! Of course they're limited use, but we also have year of manufacture law, where you can display OH plates from the year your car was built instead of your antique plates...

if you live here for any length of time, if you have a Kal drivers-license. The cops will cite you for having a Kal DL and out-of-state plates on a car registered to you, as they think you are trying to avoid the state car use fees. I did a shift as a ride-along with the CHP on the first day they had Mustangs at the local office, and we spent the first two hours pulling over every car with out-of-state plates to see if they had Kal DLs. Even in the classic film-noir movie "Detour" which was made in 1945, when the noir hero drives into California the CHP guy at the border warns him that he has to get Kal plates if he stays over 15 days.
