Excerpts from an article by Stephan Wilkinson

"So why would anybody treasure a car from the 1970s? For the same resons certain automobiles have survived every erano matter how commonplace they seemed at the time. Who would have thought that a 1957 Chevy would become a cult object? Secretary-cheap Mustangs; '49 Fords; Dodge pickups; molasses-slow MG-TDs; even Edsels -- some are funky, some kitsch classics, and others true milestones perceived as such only in retrospect. Here's a list of seventies wheels you wish you would have saved.

Any Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona

1970 Datsun 240Z

1973 Pontiac Firebird TransAm

Any Citroen DS-21

1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible

1970 Porsche 911 Turbo

1978 Jaguar XJ12C

Saab 99 Turbo

--and--

1972 BMW 2002tii: Many still say this is 'the last real BMW': the end of a working breed that thereafter became a tame yuppie-puppie. BMW for its part, prefers to forget the spare, tough 2002tii and the antisocial varoomers who drove it, lights flashing arrogantly in your rearview mirror. It was a boxy, upright, high-roofed little two-door sedan, yet with a forward-leaning look, as if it were straining at a leash. This is the one that first redefined 'sportscar,' giving it a roof and four seats."

This article was publish in March 1986, while BMW was making eta 3-ers for the USA market and calling them "performance cars." The E30 325is was a model year away. (The first M3s were not built until December, 1986 according to my sources.)

BTW, I LOVED my '78 Saab 99 turbo!!!

That's a cool list, but the 1970 Porsche 911 Turbo doesn't exist. 1976 perhaps? Or a '70 911T.
