Hello everyone. I'm new to the group and this is my first post. I just finished putting a 320i back together-a semi restoration project (practice!), but my heart is in the 2002 of which I have never owned. There's a '74 2002 in my neck of the woods for a real good deal. VERY CLEAN! However it's 1) an automatic and 2) has a broken 320i engine in it. I can deal with the engine part but I want a manual tranny. I also have a parts car source with all the pedals and linkage. How much trouble would it be to do a 4 speed or 5 speed conversion? Any feed back would be great. Thanks.

Pretty straightforward conversion. The nice thing is the auto tunnel is bigger resulting in more clearence for the 5 speeds clutch slave.

Thanks Chris and Peter for the help. Next question-I have never driven a 2002. I'm assuming that the 2002's are much less in weight than my 320i, and that they handle and accelerate much better than the 320i, and are generally more fun to drive (although I really enjoy driving my gutless 320!). I had a great time putting my 320i together, and it was cheap! I'm trying to determine wether or not this 2002 is a worthwhile project. What are the pros and cons of the 2002 vs. the 320I? Should I hold out for an earlier round-light 2002 model? Any thoughts and opinions would be great, Thanks.

It's a worthwhile project anytime you can save a 2002 from heading off to the bone yard!
