Flywheel isn't a big factor regarding idle. If your carb and ignition settings are good idle will be fine. Because of the cam it may require some more revs.

Is it safe to lighten the stock flywheel? I assume that it is a cast unit, so when you remove material and spin the motor at higher rev's would the flywheel not want to come apart like bullets?

Can't remember how much I lightened mine but that was 20 years ago and it's still in one piece!

Was that for a racing application? and what kind of Rev's are doing?

There are both cast and steel flywheels in m10's. Later are cheaper cast ones but I don't know when they've changed it. If you use the steel wheel it's safe as anything. I've had about 5.5 kg wheel and rev limit at 7200 - no problem. Now I've made a new wheel using 215mm as blank. It's made for 184mm race clutch and weight is about 5 kg. Will use more revs after I've updated rockers.

I lightened it for street use however I've had it out at the track many times. Lots of continuous 6000+ RPM. No Problem!

It has little or no effect on idle. Revs freely though!
