Something I have trouble remembering to do. Place a drop or two of lightweight oil on your distributor pad.

the pad is the tan thing on top of the distributor chaft.

Tan felt thing. I think they call it felt. Inserted into the distributor shaft.

uhhh, what if yours doesn't have that? I've never seen it in mine. I've poured oil into the shaft, but never saw the end of its journey.

shaft. You can see it when you remove the rotor.

Oil on the pad keeps the upper part of your distributor lubricated. There is a certain amount of oil that will make its way up the shaft to lubricate some parts of the distributor. Keeping this pad lubricated, keeps the upper part of the distributor happy.

In the pic attached, the rotor is a rev limiting one and the black disk is the optical shutter for a Crane XR 700
