On my way to work yesterday, my shifter felt like it was going through heavy mud as I was going through the gears. On my way home, I heard a noise that sounded like a fan hitting something. The noise only happened when I was moving. At a red light the sound went away. As I shifted through the gears the sound progressed and was in time with the RPMs. Then the shifter got loose and I could feel the noise vibrate through the shifter. THEN, when I shifted into 4th, I heard a metal clang.

I took the back roads to keep the RPMs down to try to get home. On the last leg of my journey, the sound got louder and I was afraid my gearbox was going to drop out of the floor as I climbed the hill to my house.

My guess is the gearbox is shot. How do I know if it's the clutch doing this versus the gearbox? What should I be looking for? Or should I not look for it and just trailer the car to the garage?

Thanks in advance.

There are metal-rubber mounting blocks that wear out and then lets the shifter platform hit the driveshaft. Look underneath for a nice shiny ring around the driveshaft as a telltale sign.

Have you checked your flex disc? . . . I had a very similar experience with vibrations, difficulty shifting and intermittent clanging in my 1980 e12 that turned out to be a worn out flex disc. $30 bucks for a new one & less than an hour to change it out and it was smooth as silk again. Hope that your problem is something equally simple.

However, the guibo was replaced about 9 months ago so I doubt that is it. I'm 'gowing under' here in a little bit once I get caught up on emails and updating 2 documents. That's what's nice about working out of a home office whenever you want to!

I"ll update in a couple hours......

Guibo, driveshaft, tranny mount, shift connector all were intact with no excess play.

It sounded to me that something was loose in the gearbox and made a mess inside.

If everything external is in good order it is possible that the tranny shelled a bearing although sudden catastrophic failures are rare in my experience. We've got a dozen or so good used boxes. We can sort through them all and you can have the best one we can find for about $75. Could you feel any strange rotational movement through the clutch pedal as in worn out throwout bearing, damaged clutch plate etc.? Again if it IS the tranny it's really not a big deal other than getting the car here. Lemme know!
