will a windage tray for a 2002 m10 block work in a s14 motor they are the same block aren't they? i'am doing a m2 conversion and have to change oil pans

REMEMBER SOME PEOPLE ARE ALIVE SIMPLY BECAUSE IT IS ILLEGAL TO SHOOT THEM

I believe it uses the same windage tray if you use an M10 oil pick-up. I'm not positive on that, as I bought a modified 2002 pan from Dave @ Aardvarc Racing. With my set-up, I installed a new E30M3 oil pump modified to use the oil pick-up of a M10 and it all bolted up with no problems. The real test of course is when I finish the project and start her up for the first time.

Hmnn depends what you mean by windage tray.

A windage tray keeps the oil flung off the rotational assembly from bouncing off the pan/oil level and getting flung back around the crank/rods etc.

The s14 has a built in windage tray which is bolted into the cast aluminum upper oil pan.

The m10 does not have a windage tray stock. There are some conversion kits in europe from casel that adapt the s14 tray to the m10 steel pan. I've never seen one in person so I don't know how well it's implemented.

Now some people baffle the m10 oil pan to prevent oil starvation in cornering and braking. That baffle sold by TEP, Ireland, etc is not a windage tray. Some more sophisticated (and rarer) m10 race pans use the whole hinged trapdoor baffles.

Perhaps you mean the crank scraper sold by ireland and others. Search crank scraper in google. https://secure11.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=ireland&BusType=BtoC&Count1=834789454&Count2=751929879&CategoryID=1&Target=products%2Easp

This isn't really a true windage tray, but works in similiar manner. The edges of the sheet metal shear the oil/air emulsion off the rotational assembly and keep it in the pan.

However, the one that ireland sells is made for the stock m10. Which means it will bolt up to the s14 block but will most likely interfer with the s14 crank and rods due to the longer stroke. I have not checked this persay, but I'd wager a bit of money this is true.

You could modify the ireland crank scraper for the s14, and it'd probably a good idea.

An important note is that a crank scraper/windage tray does not mean you do not have to baffle the oil pan. The scraper/windage trays work in the horizontal planes (generally speaking) and baffles work in the vertical plane. The stock s14 with the windage tray often needs a larger lower oil pan baffle installed to stop oil starvation failures in long right corners.

So windage/scrapers are nice but optional, but for any hard driven-tracked m10/s14 definitely need better baffling or be ready to pay for new engines often.

Just to clarify, I'd think you installed an E30M3 S14 pump modified with the pickup from a 2002 M10, as opposed to modified to use (accept) that pickup.

The original wording implies there is something different on an S14 pump body, where actually that part is identical to the 2002 (same part #.)

The same pump body is used with different pickups to fit the specific models.

The pickup for the 2002 is also used with the E12M10, but nowhere else.

The E21M10 pickup is used on E28M10 (518i), E30M10, and E30S14.

Any of these pickups bolt right up to a regular 2002 pump body, because the pump (less pickup) is the same in all the models listed above.

As for the windage tray, it should work with either crank as long as it's not fitted as tight as a crank scraper.

The 2.0L M10 has a stroke of 80 mm, and the crank OD at the counter weight is ~ 140 mm.

The 2.3L S14 has a stroke of 84 mm, and the crank OD is about 143.3 mm.

Of course, the feature that swings the widest arc is the big end of the con rod itself!

Yes........ Your statement is more correct. Thanks for clarifying.

I just bought the Ireland M10 windage tray (or scraper). It bolts up to the S14 block, and required some minor clearancing to fit my S14, which has the M10 oil pump pickup. I also bought the Ireland M10 baffle, which I'm going to weld in my M10 oilpan.
