it appears that Bilstein does not stock sport or HD inserts for either early (77-79) or late (80-83) E21 4 cylinder struts (didn't check on 320/6 or 323 units - 6 cylinder and 4 cylinder struts are supposedly different).

Given that both HD's and sports are still available for '02's, it would appear that E21 and '02 inserts are NOT interchangable - the only way to know for sure would be to do a carefull comparison of dimensions for both (and even if they were identical externally, there could still be valving issues.....).

One other thought - if you've come by some E21 Bilsteins, it might be worth offering them for sale on one of the E21 boards. If Bilstein isn't making them any longer, there might be sufficent demand for used units that you might be able to sell 'em and at least partially pay for new '02 units with the proceeds.

I have a set of 320i and 02 ones here. They are different. The 320i ones are about an inch longer, and there is a slight difference in diameter.
