Timing chain broke its connecting link. How much engine damage could there be?

I have not yet disassembled motor.

You might find a broken valve embeded into a piston - not good at all. A 2nd hand motor could be a cheeper option than a rebuild. Beaner7102

Well, it didn't sound good! As I recall, kind of a metallic snap then silence.

Low rpm's and backfiring.

Best case, no other damage than the timing chain. Worst case, some bent valves and some gouges in the top of some pistons. If the rpm's were low you might get lucky...
