OK a couple last questions of you guys that have done the deed. I'm about to put the M20 engine in (w/ 5-speed OD tranny) and want to know:

?? With or without exhaust headers ??

?? With or without intake manifold ??

Other than the usual of lifting the nose as high as possible and removing the center link, any other useful tips?

THANKS!!

we did no exhaust manifolds and kept the intake installed. I guess the intake will be more of an issue for you. Also did you remove the unnecessary pulley wheel (I think it was for AC or something) at the front of the crank? It may not clear if you don't get rid of it. Congrats John and good luck!

Yeah, ditch the exhaust, keep the intake. Trying to put the intake on after the fact is more of a pain in the ass than the pain in the ass to get the engine in with it. did that make sense? yeah, I think so.

John, got any pics of your work? Nice to see its coming together.

before lowing the motor in. Might have to use bungy cords to kept it inplace against the inner fender. That is the only way on some American V8 cars for using headers.

oh, and JohnN, I'm sorry, i forgot that it's easier for me to put on the int manif because my heater and all things supporting it are gone. so, ill have to agree w/everyone else.. keep the intake on.

..and I also do not own a BMW 2002.

I left the upper bulkhead in place (that forms the airbox for the heater/vents), so leaving the intake manifold on was very difficult. We ended up taking it off to put the engine in. The exhaust manifolds were fine left on.
