an elusive ignition issue

I recently noticed my vac capsule has never worked so I popped a new one in last night. As the old one came out, I saw that not only was the diaphragm torn or rotten, but the arm was seized up, thereby pushing the plate in a funny direction (and keeping it from moving smoothly) so, I oiled the plate a bit, assured that it moved freely and with a little vacuum, that the arm advanced the plate. all was well. the car runs bettter at higher rpms and idles fine but bucks like hell at what feels like 2000-2500 rpms (I have no tach.)

so, while home for lunch, I reset the point gap thinking that freeing up that sticky point plate may have knocked the gap out.

no dice. it may even be rougher than before. am I overlooking something?

Thanks for the help,

Brent

dwell??

You CANNOT set your points properly with just a feeler gauge. Dwell angle is the only measure that has any meaning. Once you adjust your points, you need to re-time the ignition. Every one degree of dwell change will give you two degrees of timing change. You will notice significant performance differences with only 2-4 degrees of timing change.
