Found this pic of the inverted front Bilsteins I have on my car. It's the one on the bottom. Notice piston and strut tube size . The top strut is a standard 02. In the event one goes out, you send in the entire assembly to be revalved. The struts come out the bottom. Supposidly Bilstein only made 500 pairs of them for 02's. Any body know any more about these ?67182430.jpg

No these are different look at the size of the shock rod, these shocks are also sealed, in other words there is no cartrage to remove the strut tube is the outside of the shock. Bilstein made green dot (street) yellow dot (sport) and red dot (race) styles of these. I have a set of yellow dots and a set of red dots. These shocks are by far the best fromt shocks i've ever driven on for the 02s

Don't worry about the world ending today,

Hell it's already tomorrow in Australia.

Hello All, in addition to the three strut types Marty mentions, there's an adjustable height version of the red dot. Below is an Alpina press photo showing the adjustable version on the left.

I have a set of old Bisteins (1972 era) that are Lime Yellow or Green. The

serial #s indicate they are sports, but feel stiffer compared to the Sports that Bilstein sells now. Furthermore the rear shocks are inverted, but their rebound action is neary frozen. Fronts are still good. Inverted shocks seem like a good way of reducing unsprung weight.

While today's styling trends emphasize large wheels that increase unsprung weight by as much as 100%, engineers of the best tuned machines go through great pains to reduce the weight below the springs.

Take a look at the Ferrari Enzo or Formula 1 suspensions.
