I currently vent the crankcase into my air filter. I was thinking of changing it to one of the little filters that attaches to the valve cover. Any thoughts? Pros/cons? Is one brand better than the other?

This is an example of what I'm talking about...

---As prescribed in the 2002 Restoration Guide book.

Some may argue that I'm killing baby wombats with this practice, but I don't have any emissions testing or inspections in my state. The filter you talk about won't hurt as long as you cap the hole on your aircleaner.

Its a fine mist, but mist nonetheless. It will mess things up over time.

And, the filter could plug up and cause pressure.

The filters are nice and shiney.

If you don't like burning the crankcase fumes, you could install a nice shiney catch can.

Yours appears to be set up neatly and correctly. There is no advantage to dumping your blow-by directly into the atmosphere. Is your setup causing any problem?

RUN IT IN TO A CATCH BOTTLE , or

hose to the lower frame rail,

but having the filter just adds oil

vapor fumes to your interior/venting system,

and when the filter becomes blocked - more agro.

The little filter is not a good idea.

I'm having my valve cover powder coated and as I was removing the braided line I stabbed my thumb on one of the ends... This got me thinking... I saw one of the little filters and thought if they work just fine, why not... And, no more blood letting!

I remember getting stabbed by the vacuum hose to the brake booster. The crankcase vent hose can be ordinary rubber; it doesn't need to be braided.

Yes, it doesn't need to be, but it sure does look purdy! The blood simply rinses off, no problem!

I went a little bizarre! My wife complained about the oil stink in the garage everytime I shutdown the engine (tight at only 4k miles too!) So I used a few different ideas together. Catch can plus drag race vent to the exhaust system to scavenge at engine speed. I am assured of .01 extra horsepower @ 7000 rpm!

So valve cover breather to a little oil catch can mounted a bit higher on the firewall. This is to allow any oil to drain back after shut down. From there down through a one way exhaust valve (Moroso or Summit) and then to a nipple welded after the header collector.

So far no problems and no smell.

Yah, I know... "nice engine but look at that dirty washer bottle!"

O.K. You win! Somehow I don't think I'll attempt that... I may just go back to my original setup when I get my valve cover back...

Thanks for all the tips/hints guys!
