OK, got the pan and pump off fine without lifting engine thanks to tim's instruction. cleaned up pan, waitin on paint to dry.

The problem is change the stuff on the front of the pump. theres a bracket with three bolt holes on mine, but nothing like that on the new febi-bilstein pump. i can't see any easy way to pull off the bracket and change them. do i need to unbolt the center piece/gasket of the oil pump, and grip it from behind? don't like tearing into new pump like that. otherwise, theres no way i can see to unscrew the bracket off of there.

the new one was some splines close to the pump, and threads on the outside. i got no way to get leverage to pull bracket off old one.

No, don't start taking the pump apart. If I'm understanding what you found, the difference is the old pump had the three bolts attaching the sprocket, and the new pump requires a different sprocket, washer, and nut. All new pumps (beginning several years ago) have used the single nut, splined attachment.

All three of the following are needed when switching to the new pump:

07 11 9 932 634 Spacer Ring 12x18x1.7

11 41 1 273 688 Sprocket

07 11 9 900 079 Nut - M10x1

They must go on in the order shown above, the spacer/washer goes behind the sprocket, not right under the nut.

C.D. has posted an illustration of these parts about a gazillion times, do a search & find it if you need clarification.

ah shit, never saw that in the archives before, and nobody said that in thread i posted askin for help and what i needed to order. CD posted that pic, but as usual wasn't very helpful in explaining things, and never said anything about an old style pump.

Never very helpful ;-)

Actually, this should have been brought up by whomever sold you the pump... they weren't giving you an exact replacement and should have sold you what you need

I just hope BMW of Honolulu has it in stock tomorrow, or I'm really screwed. Coulda take weeks from the mainland.

It was a miracle any place locally even had an oil pump, I wouldn't expect them to explain that much. It just showed up on their computer, and there were no stickers anything advising on the packaging.

either Center BMW or Santa Monica BMW. I'll pack it up and send it. I've got family in Hawaii Kai and Kailua, but I won't be there for another week and a half.

Why don't you check with a local wrecking yard or call a few BMW independants on the island to see if they may have a used assembly.

Thanks much Craig, I'll prolly give you an e-mail tomorrow if they don't have one.

Luckily my roommate is gone for a while so i can use his car, but I don't like having the car sit out there with no oil pan. I'd love to get the parts overnighted over if the dealership doesn't have it.

I don't know if Hawaii Import Parts would have it, but they're the only other suspect, and I'll check tomorrow after goin to the dealer. If not there, not much option for wrecking yards. I know where there are two junked 2002s that I can pick off of, but then I'd have to go to all the trouble goin all the way across the island to them, pullin the pan myself, and likely finding the same three bolt setup as my car.

Dude, widen yor search. E30 318i's, E21 4cyl's had m10's and are more likely to have the "new style" sprocket assembly.

ah, I had no idea. But pickins are mighty slim here. I've never even heard about a BMW at all in a junkyard on this island.... :(

ack, this is gettin confusing. so here is the pic:

6-7374648.JPG

That looks a lot different than the one I pulled out, not counting the sprocket. The new pump came with one o-ring (#2), a spring (#9), a long metal tube with a collar near an end (#10), and little metal sleeve (#8). I have no idea what this part of the mechanism even does. And where do I find #24? On the new pump, in that shaft, there was only a little washer held in by a snap ring.

On my old pump, there was a threaded collar that resembled #24 but with a long narrow shaft like 2 inches long, and it had a spring behind it.

Could someone please give me a dumbed down explanation of how this goes together and what it does, and what I need?

Thanks.

OK, the way i see it, #24 is isn't necessary. I looked at the same diagram on realoem.com, and it says if a part isn't listed, it isn't installed on your vehicle, and there was no listing for 24. It also looks like they show #10 backwards. The collar should be at the other end. Otherwise, theres no way to cram the piston down on there with that much spring force. so snap ring holds in washer, #10 sits on top washer, with spring on top of that, and force goes thru piston at end.

But, I still have no clue of the general idea that this thing is accomplishing. some kind of pressure relief valve i guess?

ok i think i figured out how pressure relief valve sits, #10 is shown correct. It just has to slide thru washer, then it resembles old one.

I got a new sprocket, nut, and washer at Hawaii Import Parts. Dealership had only the nut. But, I couldn't find any adjuster shims anywhere. It seems like my chain had way more slack than necessary, and only one shim in place. The guy at HIP said its probably a worn chain, and I should replace it. He had that in stock, and sold it to me for $15. He said that with new chain I may not need more shims. But now I gotta take off the whole timing chain to get to it... ugh...
